The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting is looking to hire a Senior Accountant to join the Finance and Operations teams. The Senior Accountant position plays a vital role in our finance team, working closely with colleagues to prepare comprehensive financial reports and perform detailed analyses. This position is responsible for ensuring compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements related to financial practices. Additionally, the Senior Accountant position oversees the accounts receivable process, ensuring timely and accurate invoicing and payments and process of month-end close out.

To excel in this role, candidates must demonstrate exceptional time management abilities to meet deadlines consistently. Strong organizational skills are essential for managing multiple tasks and priorities effectively. This role requires a proactive approach to problem-solving and a commitment to maintaining accurate financial records.

Responsibilities:

  • Process daily transactions to record in the accounting system.
  • Collaborate with the external accounting team to ensure accurate recording of daily transactions in the accounting system.
  • Process invoices and payment in accounts receivable.
  • Record and reconcile all accounts receivables transactions, bank deposits and accounts receivable aging report.
  • Collaborate with the Development team to update donations received via online donation via bank activity twice a month.
  • Work with staff to ensure proper coding of all expenses including credit card transactions.
  • Coordinate work with external accounting capacity as needed.
  • Recognize revenue under ASC 606 and ASC 958.
  • Liaison between HR and external accounting for the payroll related entries.
  • Review the investment activity and prepare financial statements and reports related to investment activity.
  • Manage and oversee the accounting for endowment funds.
  • Process month-end close and prepare financial statements.
  • Calculate draw amount based on monthly expenses for deferred revenue.
  • Review month-end expenses and releases from restricted funds.
  • Update Chart of Accounts and classes/codes when needed.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Finance, prepare for year-end close.
  • Prepare the required schedules and collect supporting documentation for the annual audit.
  • Identify and recommend improvements to accounting processes and procedures to the Director of Finance.
  • Participate in the planning processes for the organization.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or related degree.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of nonprofit accounting experience preferred.
  • Proficiency in Sage Intacct and online payment processing systems.
  • Microsoft Excel knowledge and analytical capabilities.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with an external accounting team.
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to meeting deadlines.

Location:

This position will be primarily remote, but strong priority given to candidates in the Washington DC, Maryland, and Virginia areas who can commute into the Washington DC office.

Compensation for US-based employees:

The Center uses an established compensation philosophy in administering compensation. Offers are determined based on candidate qualifications, related experience, internal equity, and the amount budgeted for the position.

Salary range listed is for US-based employees.
