Description

Chewonki Foundation is seeking a Mental Health Coordinator to join the Health and Wellness Center team! We’re looking for a compassionate and collaborative Mental Health Coordinator with experience in an outdoor educational setting, dedicated to supporting children and adolescents with a positive, approachable demeanor. 

  • Location: Wiscasset, Maine (On Campus)
  • Reports to: Supervising Registered Nurse
  • Schedule: Year Round, 24 - 30 hours per week, with some on-call hours 
  • Salary:  $46,000 - $51,000/Annually

Position Summary:

The Mental Health Coordinator (MHC) is a part-time position providing a range of culturally competent mental health services to its diverse population of participants within Chewonki programs throughout the year.  The MHC provides support and mental health training for all programs and works closely with other Health and Wellness Center staff, Program Directors, parents, staff, and external mental health professionals to support all matters relating to participants’ emotional well-being while at Chewonki.

Chewonki has a holistic, strengths-based approach to mental health, meeting participants where they are at and guiding them towards self-awareness and self-advocacy. The MHC collaborates with all program leaders to include all voices, including participants themselves, in creating tools to guide them through a successful experience while in a Chewonki program. Chewonki strives to foster an environment of equity where every person is respected and valued. 

Essential Responsibilities Summary:

  • Develop consistent mental health policies and procedures for all programs in collaboration with the Health and Wellness Center team, the Risk Management Team and other Program Directors.
  • Evaluate and follow up on all enrollment eligibility concerns and coordinate Circle of Care meetings when necessary.
  • Prepare and share out Participant Support Plans for both pre-existing mental health conditions and those that arise while in a Chewonki program.
  • Participate in critical incident management including advising on mental health implications involved in potential disciplinary situations with community impact.
  • Provide consultation to program leaders when mental health concerns arise and direct therapeutic support for participants/staff when appropriate. 
  • Train all staff on the Chewonki Student Assistance Program to ensure no one is alone with a mental health concern. Coordinate necessary referrals to outside providers for crisis or safety assessments, and plans for re-entry after a participant's mental health leave.

Qualifications

  • Required to hold one of the following State of Maine licenses:
    • Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) or School Psychologist (PhD) 
    • Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) 
  • Experience working in an outdoor educational setting or demonstrated equivalent experience working with children, adolescents, and families.
  • Positive, compassionate, collaborative, and approachable personality. 
  • Passionate about working with children and adolescents and able to connect easily with this population. 
  • Committed to actively working to create a just, equitable and inclusive community.
  • Cultural competency and skills for engaging with and learning from people with diverse backgrounds and experiences.
  • Committed to personal and professional growth and working as part of a team.
  • Must complete fingerprinting requirements and pass a criminal background check with the Maine Department of Education.
