The Boston Athenaeum brings people together and connects them in unexpected ways with books, art, ideas, and each other.  Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, the Membership  Manager is pivotal in developing strategies to grow membership, enhance member engagement, and achieve revenue targets. This role requires strategic thinking and a passion for cultivating relationships with members and visitors.

Key Responsibilities:

Membership Program Development:

  • Develop and implement a strategic membership program that aligns with the Athenaeum’s mission and long-term goals.
  • Set and achieve membership revenue and growth targets in collaboration with the Chief Development Officer.
  • Oversee the membership renewal process and employ effective strategies to engage, retain, and recruit members.

Member Engagement and Cultivation:

  • Serve as the primary representative of the membership department, addressing inquiries, resolving complaints, and ensuring high levels of member satisfaction.
  • Oversee member benefits and their fulfillment process to ensure timely and accurate delivery.
  • Collaborate with Events and Education teams to leverage member events for growth and engagement.

Collaboration and Strategic Planning:

  • Partner with the marketing team to design and execute a comprehensive membership marketing plan for member acquisition.
  • Contribute to initiatives to ensure a sustainable revenue base for the organization.
  • Foster strong relationships with members, understanding their needs and enhancing their connection to the Athenaeum.

Staff Management:

  • Lead and mentor a team of frontline membership staff, ensuring high levels of service and performance.
  • Oversee daily operations of the membership desk and manage staff performance goals.

Visitor Services

  • Contribute to a welcoming and informative experience for all Athenaeum visitors by managing front-line staff and operations.
  • Partner with the Education and Marketing Departments on collateral needs to enhance the visitor experience.
  • Address visitor inquiries and resolve issues to maintain high levels of customer satisfaction and engagement.
  • Track visitor numbers with regularity to inform institutional decisions

Data Management and Reporting:

  • Maintain the security, accuracy, and integrity of the membership database.
  • Analyze membership data to identify new opportunities and assess program effectiveness.
  • Generate reports to measure the success of membership campaigns and inform strategic decision-making.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of five years of experience in non-profit membership organizations.
  • Experience managing staff
  • Proven track record of meeting revenue targets and driving membership growth.
  • Strong customer service orientation with exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Experience with database management, preferably Salesforce.
  • Analytical skills with the ability to generate and interpret reports.
  • Enthusiastic, outgoing personality with a proactive and action-oriented approach.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across departments and with diverse stakeholders.
  • Maintain confidentiality and discretion related to all matters of membership, institutional, and personnel.
  • Commitment to fostering a workplace culture of teamwork, diversity, and inclusion.
