Job title: Managing/Artistic Director Location: 1108 Main Street, Vancouver, WA 98660 Terms: Full-time (35-40 hours a week, any overtime must be approved) Start date: TBD Salary/rate: $20-25/hr based on experience and skill level ($41K-52K/year) Benefits: 

Requirements: Earned Vacation, Commission on Grants & Fundraising (TBD)

Varied/flexible work schedule. Should have some weekend and evening flexibility for theater programming. This is not a normal 9 to 5, but does not require every evening at the theater. Rehearsals are mostly 6:30p-9:30p, shows 7p-10p. Programming is 3 weekends each of 5 Main Stage productions, plus various 1-2 night programming for Black Chair productions, Music Revues, and others. Rental times may be varied.

About the role: The Managing/Artistic Director manages the day-to-day operations and artistic management of the theater. The Managing/Artistic Director will report directly to Magenta’s Board of Directors and serve a critical role in operations/artistic leadership and external relations. A successful candidate will enjoy motivating and managing a community theater in a sometimes fast-paced environment. The Board of Directors is a working board, able to fill in or help with many daily responsibilities at the theater. Primary responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  Role and Responsibilities:

LEADERSHIP

  • Through an active exchange of ideas with the Board, develop and execute plans and activities to realize Magenta's strategic growth.
  • Serve as Magenta’s top administrative leader.
  • Bolster Magenta’s financial base by maintaining current support and identifying and securing new earned and contributed revenue sources.
  • Manage human resources including any other staff and volunteers, including Box Office, Social Media, Website, Volunteers, and Public Relations.
  • Foster a company culture that celebrates teamwork and generous collaboration through the articulation of clear goals, directions, and constant open communication.
  • Form committees for volunteers to participate in the future of Magenta, including Programming, Grants/Fundraising, and DEIA.

ARTISTIC

  • Opportunity to direct one show per season: casting, providing guidance to actors and stage crew, working with artistic leads to see the show’s vision to fruition. 
  • Provide support for all productions produced at Magenta. (Attending production meetings, auditions, and a few rehearsals through the process, resource for Directors, etc)
  • Reports to the Board of Directors on a regular basis to give an update on artistic activity. 
  • Acts as spokesperson for Magenta’s artistic purpose. 
  • Acts on the committee along with a Board Member for hiring directors, designers, and production managers.
  • Acts on committee along with a Board Member for programming, including choosing season, scouting new plays, soliciting submissions from local playwrights. 

ADMINISTRATION AND FINANCIAL OVERSIGHT

  • Oversee the annual budget process alongside Magenta’s Board Treasurer, with input from other relevant parties as needed.
  • Monitor financial performance and proactively adjust operations to changes in financial circumstances.
  • Manage partnership operations, including rental agreements. 
  • Evaluate established vendor relationships, contracts, and leases and adjust benefitting Magenta’s operations.
  • In tandem with the Fundraising Committee, solicit grants, sponsorships, program advertisements, etc. 
  • Anticipate and plan for ongoing building maintenance and capital improvements.
  • Reports to the Board of Directors on a regular basis to give an update on theater activity. 
  • Negotiate rental contracts and ensure volunteer staffing is adequate for all rentals.

EXTERNAL RELATIONS AND COMMUNICATIONS

  • Be an unabashed and enthusiastic steward for Magenta in Southwestern Washington, curate and maintain relationships with current and future patrons.
  • Foster strong relationships within the Southwestern Washington civic and business community, actively developing a valuable professional network.
  • Assist in developing marketing and communications.

STRATEGIC AND DEIA LEADERSHIP

  • Drive ownership and accountability across the entire Magenta team to deliver on the defined objectives of Magenta’s Strategic and DEIA plans.
  • Challenge Magenta to be inclusive in progressive new ways to expand diversity, inclusion, and equity, proactively identifying and breaking down barriers to access.
  • The managing director shall work closely with the board to further Magenta's goal of improving equity, diversity, and inclusion efforts, and fostering an environment where all people are welcome.

CANDIDATES SHOULD HAVE THE FOLLOWING QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, AND TRAITS:

  • Have a minimum of 2 year’s experience in non-profit arts administration, arts administration, directing, theater administration, and other relevant experience.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel, social media, email, and other software platforms (Slack/Google Suite/Asana Etc).
  • Preferred: Relevant experience working with non-profit Boards of Directors, high level funders, and deeply dedicated volunteers.
  • Show strong organizational abilities with attention to detail, the ability to work both collaboratively and independently.
  • A strong commitment to DEIA (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Access) embodied in personal values and professional practices.
  • Talent for motivating and mentoring teams and setting aspirational goals.
  • Possess strong writing and communication skills.
  • A sense of mission with an ability to prioritize effectively and delegate, if needed.
