General Summary:

Under the direction of the Vice President and Chief Development Officer, the Major and Planned Giving Officer is responsible for identifying, cultivating, growing, and soliciting major gift and planned giving prospects to benefit Sheppard Pratt. The Major and Planned Giving Officer is expected to carry a portfolio and work that portfolio, bringing in at least $500K in year one and at least $1M in years 2+. These goals will be re-evaluated annually.

Principal Responsibilities and Duties:

  1. Building Relationships
    • Actively seeks to enhance Sheppard Pratt’s initiatives to meet the needs of patients, families, donors, trustees, staff, local businesses, government, communities, national organizations, and foundations.
    • Promotes and maintains positive relationships with donors, staff, physicians, clinicians, and patient families.
  2. Raising Funds
    • Collaborates with the VP and CDO to develop major and planned giving prospects for the health system.
    • Personally communicates with and visits major and planned giving prospects and donors.
    • Actively works their portfolio to identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward prospects and donors in their portfolio.
    • For planned giving prospects, advises on current and deferred strategies and methods of giving to maximize gift and tax benefits. Ensures that all planned gifts (current and prospective) have appropriate documentation.
    • Initiates and directs the preparation of solicitation letters, proposals, and other cultivation and stewardship materials for major and planned giving prospects and donors.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

  1. Requires bachelor’s degree and 7-10 years of non-profit fundraising experience, with an emphasis on major and planned giving, principles, guidelines, concepts, and techniques.
  2. Health care fundraising background preferred, mental and behavioral healthcare experience a plus.
  3. Work requires problem solving and conceptual skills using data to make recommendations and implement major and planned giving strategies.
  4. Work requires strong oral and written communication skills, superior interpersonal skills to effectively interact with a wide variety of Sheppard Pratt employees, physicians, prospects, and donors, and the excitement and ability to speak knowledgeably and persuasively on behalf of Sheppard Pratt to potential donors and patient families.
  5. Work requires meeting deadlines, responding promptly to donor requests for information, and managing the demands of multiple projects.
  6. Work requires advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite, Zoom, and the ability to learn to use Raiser’s Edge fundraising software.

Pay for this position is determined on a number of factors, including but not limited to, years and level of related experience.
