About Physicians for Social Responsibility Pennsylvania (PSR PA)

PSR Pennsylvania is a public health, 501c3 non-profit organization which fulfills its mission through programs focused on health and the environment and working with youth. Composed of a variety of health professionals, PSR Pennsylvania is uniquely equipped to discuss threats posed to public health in our region. 

The Position

PSR PA’s environmental health and climate programs support communities and individuals impacted by toxic industries, while also amplifying the voice of health professionals to advocate for health-protective measures that strengthen state and federal policies related to climate, energy, and health. 

The Health Advocacy Outreach Coordinator reports to the Executive Director and serves these key functions:

 

Health Professional Outreach

  • Identify, engage, and recruit health professionals across Pennsylvania to join PSR PA’s advocacy efforts.
  • Develop and maintain a network of health professionals committed to environmental health and justice.
  • Mobilize health professionals to advocate for communities impacted by toxic industries through campaigns, testimony, public speaking, and written communications.
  • Coordinate health professional participation in PSR PA’s initiatives, including educational events, webinars, and advocacy actions.
  • Facilitate connections between health professionals and impacted communities to support collaborative advocacy.
  • Organize workshops, webinars, and presentations to educate health professionals on environmental health issues and advocacy opportunities.
  • Provide resources and training for effective advocacy, including media engagement and legislative testimony.
  • Develop outreach materials, including newsletters, social media content, and presentations, to recruit and engage health professionals.
  • Maintain regular communication with members and potential recruits to foster long-term engagement.
  • Maintain a database of recruited health professionals and their participation in PSR PA initiatives.
  • Report on recruitment progress and advocacy outcomes to PSR PA leadership.

 

Environmental Movement Community

  • Support day-to-day operations of Environmental Movement Community (EMC) 
  • Build relationships with community organizations and leaders in regions impacted by toxic industry.
  • Organize residents around issues that impact community and environmental health in Pennsylvania including, but not limited to: coal mining, shale gas operations, petrochemical facilities, hydrogen development, power plants, and landfills.
  • Engage and collaborate with grassroots organizations and community leaders to host and promote regional meetings and initiatives. 
  • Develop and deliver training, support, and resources so residents are equipped to advocate for the health of their communities.
  • Mobilize residents for events, actions, and meetings across the state through direct outreach.

Skills and Experience

 

Communication:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for outreach, advocacy, and relationship-building.
  • Ability to tailor messages to various audiences, including health professionals, community members, and policymakers.

Networking & Relationship-Building:

  • Strong interpersonal skills for recruiting and engaging health professionals.
    Ability to build trust and maintain collaborative relationships with diverse stakeholders.

Organizational & Project Management:

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
  • Strong attention to detail and effective time-management skills.

Advocacy & Public Speaking:

  • Comfort with public speaking, facilitating meetings, and presenting information to groups.
  • Experience advocating for social, environmental, or public health issues is highly desirable.

Outreach & Engagement Strategies:

  • Proficiency in developing and implementing outreach plans.
  • Knowledge of grassroots organizing, coalition-building, or advocacy campaigns.

Cultural Competence & Equity Focus:

  • Commitment to equity and inclusivity in all aspects of outreach and advocacy.
  • Ability to work with communities disproportionately affected by toxic industries.

Collaboration & Teamwork:

  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Willingness to collaborate with PSR PA staff, volunteers, and partners.

Education

  • Science or health related degree preferred, or two or more years of relevant work experience.

Location: Pennsylvania (Southwest preferred)

Terms

  • This is a full-time position with occasional evening and weekend hours required.
  • Reports to the Executive Director. 
  • Annual Salary Range: $50,000 to $55,000 per year, based on experience.
  • This is a fully remote position which requires reliable transportation in order to:
    • Be present in impacted communities and at the PA Capitol.
    • Coordinate and participate in informational meetings.
    • Meet with other grassroots organizations across the state and occasionally outside Pennsylvania.
