Meals on Wheels People is an organization founded in and by the community! Over the past 50 years, our non-profit has helped thousands of older adults in the Portland Metro area keep their independence through weekly meal delivery and social connections. With over 20 meal delivery centers throughout Multnomah, Washington, and Clark counties, our staff and thousands of volunteers ensure that no adult over 60 goes hungry or experiences social isolation.

We are looking for a General Accountant to join our Finance team based in SW Portland. The General Accounting role involves managing monthly general ledger close activities, preparing journal entries, and ensuring the accuracy of financial transactions, including bank reconciliations and cash reporting. Responsibilities also include assisting with fixed asset and lease accounting, processing tax exemption paperwork, and supporting audits. Additionally, the role supports billing processes, Medicaid voucher reconciliation, and serves as a payroll back-up, with a focus on accurate payroll and benefits processing.

Our ideal candidate will have at least three years of experience in accounting or bookkeeping and be a motivated self-starter with exceptional attention to detail. They should possess strong technical, problem-solving, and analytical skills, along with the ability to follow direction, collaborate effectively in a team, and work independently. A proactive attitude and a commitment to accuracy are essential for success in this role.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

Accounting

  • Responsible for monthly general ledger close activities
  • Prepare and enter journal entries and other accounting transactions
  • Prepare assigned monthly balance sheet account reconciliations
  • Maintain overall accuracy and integrity of the general ledger
  • Reconcile bank accounts and manage daily cash reporting
  • Analyze transactions for correct coding and assignment of revenues and expenditures
  • Review and post daily collections batches to financial system
  • Organize and maintain accounting support and records
  • Calculate and enter meal numbers into meals data base
  • Assist in maintenance of fixed asset system
  • Assist in maintenance of lease accounting system
  • Process leased property tax exemption paperwork and state/city license renewals
  • Identify opportunities to improve processes and minimize inefficiencies
  • Respond to requests for financial information from all business functions
  • Assist in preparation of year-end financial and county audits.

Billing Specialist

  • Generate and send complex invoices to customers and/or counties
  • Reconcile and report healthcare contract billing/prepaid revenue status
  • Track work completed on grants for billing/revenue recognition
  • Process Medicaid vouchers for payment
  • Reconcile unpaid Medicaid revenue by client

Payroll Back-up

  • Learn payroll processing and act as back-up to the Payroll and Benefits Manager
  • Process a minimum of three payrolls a year
  • Learn how to process special payrolls (terminations, vacation payout, bonus, other)
  • Learn to audit, reconcile and prepare benefit payments
  • Reconcile payroll and benefit balance sheet accounts monthly
