Description
Camp Beech Cliff MDI is a year-round, nonprofit education / recreation center with its core program being its summer day camp with an average of 225 campers each week and a growing outdoor education program. Based on a 50-acre property on Mt. Desert Island, Maine, the camp borders Acadia National Park, and has an extensive waterfront on Echo Lake. CBC’s mission is: Camp Beech Cliff enriches the lives of people of all ages through its summer camps and year-round outdoor education and recreation programs, inspiring personal growth connections among people, and an appreciation of the natural world.
With the Executive Director, the Development Committee and Board leadership, the Director of Development will lead the organization to increase the support of Camp Beech Cliff’s mission and programs; develop inspiring and achievable annual fund goals; manage a volunteer-driven fundraising program; implement a comprehensive annual fundraising plan; build a major gifts program; manage prospects; and develop solicitation strategies. The Director of Development will be a self-motivated professional who excels in both fundraising strategy and administration, with an emphasis in building a major gifts program with the fundraising team.
Organizational Overview:
Camp Beech Cliff (CBC) is a premier year-round non-profit outdoor education organization, with a popular summer day camp and youth & adult programs in the other months of the year. CBC has a beautiful 50-acre campus that borders Acadia National Park and Echo Lake.
Major responsibilities:
- Create a team fundraising approach with the Board, Development Committee, and year-round staff and provide the leadership to actively engage fundraising volunteers to accomplish annual fundraising goals.
- Develop processes and become personally involved in identifying, cultivating, and soliciting financial support from individuals, foundations, and businesses.
- Develop and track proposals and reports for all foundation and corporate fundraising.
- Manage a prospect list and committee of volunteer solicitors and cultivate participants in the development process.
- Manage the implementation of gift acceptance policies and advises the Development Committee in annual review and updates of the policy.
- Monitor progress toward short and long-term fundraising strategy and goals, and prepares reports periodically for the Executive Director and Development Committee for status updates, strategizing, goal setting and board meetings.
- Oversee fundraising communications strategies for CBC’s target audiences including camper families, donors and the island community.
- Coordinate with the Staff Development team the course of annual events, including the Ladies Who Loonch and Summer Soiree;
- With the Executive Director, serve as a spokesperson for special events and other public speaking/publicity opportunities.
- Publicly represent the organization and cultivate relationships with community members, including prospective volunteers and supporters to build awareness of and commitment to Camp Beech Cliff’s mission.
- Works closely with the Executive Director and other staff to create ideas and themes for direct mail, online giving, grant writing, planned giving, and a major emphasis on major gifts programming and ‘moves management’
- Assist with other duties as required (consistent with the Camp Beech Cliff cross-support needs as a small non-profit dependent on all its employees and volunteers in helping with special projects from time to time).
Experience, Education, Skills and Abilities:
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in fundraising and proven track record of working with major gift solicitation, foundation giving, and special events.
- Proven ability to work collaboratively with staff, board and committee members, and other volunteers.
- Familiar with the Mount Desert Island community (preferred).
- Have a passion for the mission of CBC.
- Write well and communicate effectively.
- Can write successful grant applications within relevant deadlines (preferred).
- Exhibits strong interpersonal, supervisory, administrative and management skills.
- Effectively prioritize multiple tasks while maintaining attention to detail
- Proficiency in MS Office, Google, email and calendaring.
- Knowledge of, and able to use donor tracking systems.
- Must be able to interact positively with diverse groups of people, individually and as part of a team.
- Exhibits sound judgement, professionalism and a positive attitude.
- Resourceful, creative and has strong problem-solving skills.
- Bachelor’s degree (preferred)
Salary & Benefits:
Camp Beech Cliff offers a competitive salary ($75,000 - $80,000 range), excellent benefits (individual/family health & dental, 3% matching retirement contribution after one year of employment), 15 days paid time off (includes vacation, sick, bereavement, personal), 14 paid holidays, and a supportive and collegial work environment.
Upon hire and annually thereafter, all employees at CBC must undergo a background check with satisfactory results.
