Position Overview
The Director of Development will report to the VP of Communications & Development and will be accountable for leading and implementing strategies and initiatives for fundraising, donor cultivation, and development campaigns in support of our organizational mission to accelerate health equity globally. The Director of Development will be responsible for providing direction, contributing to strategic plans, and coordinating our fundraising initiatives around the world. The Director of Development will serve as a thought partner and driver for the creation and expansion of our development campaigns, events, and donor pipeline, and will supervise a staff of 4.
Primary Responsibilities
Fundraising Strategy Development
- Develops and executes a detailed annual fundraising plan to meet or exceed financial goals; sets clear objectives, timelines, and metrics for securing funds.
- Drives fundraising strategy in partnership with the CEO, VP of Program Strategy, and the VP of Communications & Development and in alignment with broader organizational strategy.
- Develops grant submission strategy that aligns with organization’s mission. Independently engages with foundations, investment fund managers, and corporations, and oversees submission of compelling grant proposals to secure funding.
- Monitors and evaluates annual development performance, metrics, and impact; Prepares quarterly progress reports for senior leadership and Board of Directors
- Assists the VP of Communications & Development in strategizing on new global development initiatives.
- Provides direction, mentorship, and management to development team of 4.
- Creates and oversees donor cultivation strategy for team and builds and grows relationships with most important major donors, corporate sponsors, investment funds, and foundations. Demonstrates ability to secure high-level engagement and impactful financial support from those stakeholders.
Donor Cultivation and Stewardship
- Builds robust revenue pipeline of current donors and prospects to exceed annual fundraising goals; Engages in personalized outreach and stewardship activities for major supporters to enhance donor satisfaction, loyalty, awareness of Max’s achievements, and the impact of contributions.
- Builds influential relationships with The Max Foundation’s donors and develops new strategic partnerships to accelerate Max’s fundraising program.
Fundraising Logistics
- Directs tracking, compliance, and reports for all grant requirements.
- Collaborates with team-members across the organization to deeply understand organizational operations and speak confidently about Max stories and impact to a wide donor audience.
- Oversees prospect research process and preparation of documents for successful donor meetings; Tracks all appropriate data and meeting notes in donor relationship management software (Virtuous).
- Collaborates with Communications team to produce high-quality, high-impact materials that support fundraising campaigns and enhance organizational visibility.
Campaigns and Events
- Supervises project planning and execution for development events (ex. Gala, house parties, etc.) including logistics, sponsorships, marketing, volunteer coordination, and negotiating vendor agreements and contracts to maximize revenue.
- Represents The Max Foundation at conferences, meetings, and other events to increase brand exposure and deepen prospective donor pipeline.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s or relevant certification preferred.
- 10+ years of relevant fundraising experience in the global health nonprofit sector, proven track record of closing five- and six-figure gifts.
- Significant nonprofit marketing experience including email campaigns, social media, and event marketing.
- Excellent analytical skills and proven ability to make critical decisions.
- Advanced donor cultivation and project management skills and ability to navigate a fast-paced environment with a solid track record of following through on commitments and exceeding goals.
- Experience working in a global and multicultural capacity across time zones and among a diverse team.
- Excellent written and verbal English communication skills; written and verbal fluency in French, Spanish, or another language, a plus.
- Willing and able to travel domestically or internationally.
- Passionate about The Max Foundation’s mission and vision and determined to lead and accomplish all goals related to current and future strategic plans.
- High attention to detail and a high standard for quality work product.
- Understanding of and comfortable in a global environment, with an emphasis on low and middle-income countries.
- Passion for exceptional collaboration, and flexibility to do what it takes to elevate positive culture.
- Comfort working in a complex, fast-paced, and high-workload environment.

Compensation & Benefits
The salary range for this position is $125,000 - $145,000 with the exact salary depending on experience. Offers will factor in relevant candidate qualifications, cost of labor, pay equity, and geographic location. No relocation provided; remote location possible.
