Summary

The Director of Development leads all aspects of SFJAZZ’s short and long-term contributed revenue efforts, raising nearly $10 million for the annual fund as well as capital initiatives for designated and special projects. The Director, Development manages development staff in the planning and execution of major gifts, special events, membership, institutional, and planned giving programs. Reporting to the Chief Executive Office and working closely with the Executive Artistic Director and Directors, Marketing, Finance, and Education, the Director, Development raises awareness of SFJAZZ and its programs and develops effective outreach and campaign strategies that connect with donors and community stakeholders in the Bay Area and beyond.

 

Responsibilities

  • Manage a team of development professionals with appropriate communications, individual giving and institutional giving skills and experiences; establish work plans, performance objectives, and goals for each team member
  • Prepare annual operating plans, strategies and budgets with specific analysis of general funding needs and restricted giving opportunities; incorporate fundraising targets into the budget of the organization
  • In collaboration with the Chief Executive Officer, develop a systematic communications strategy that addresses the needs and interests of current and prospective donor groups; develop materials to tell the SFJAZZ story to a diverse array of donors and prospects; ensure that these materials are distributed in a strategic, targeted, and timely fashion
  • Grow organization membership through strategic acquisition and retention efforts
  • Manage corporate and institutional (foundation) fundraising strategies, efforts and personnel
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with members of the Board of Trustees, including developing strategy and support for Trustees, Major Gifts, Corporate, and Gala Committees. Develop relationships with prospective Trustees
  • Foster strong relationships between targeted donor constituencies and SFJAZZ involving, where appropriate, the Chief Executive Officer, the Executive Artistic Director, SFJAZZ personnel, artists and members of the Board
  • Personally cultivate and steward a portfolio of some of the organization’s most important major donors, institutional partners, and prospects; Support Trustees, Chief Executive Officer, Executive Artistic Director, and other staff in cultivating and soliciting gifts
  • Design and implement a program of special events that boost institutional and individual fundraising efforts, including the annual SFJAZZ Gala galas, openings, receptions, and gatherings that deepen donor engagement in the organizational mission
  • Maximize shared data infrastructure and enhance data collection practices for strategic decision making; build a culture of analytics
  • Maintain accountability and compliance standards for donors and funding sources
  • Work closely with the Finance team on reporting and budgeting
  • Other tasks as assigned

Qualifications

  • Significant nonprofit fundraising experience in an organization that has a reputation for strategic thinking, organizational excellence, and aggressive action
  • Experience in event based membership organizations with ticketed events
  • A record of personal success in raising money through major gifts from individuals, businesses, foundations, and the public sector
  • Demonstrated management skills in motivating, directing and managing staff and consultants, and in coordinating and supporting the fundraising activities of others
  • Broad-based knowledge of various development campaign activities including: direct mail, proposal and grant development, planned giving, event planning and management, direct solicitations, leveraging fundraising databases and support systems for donor segmentation, research and volunteer management
  • A broad knowledge of brand marketing, advertising and public relations
  • A track record as an exceptional communicator, in writing as well as verbally; adept at writing proposals, solicitation letters, donor correspondence, and materials for publication
  • Exceptional analytical skills, able to parse and appropriately leverage data to benefit fundraising efforts and the organization
  • Emotionally intelligent with a good sense of humor and the flexibility and sensitivity to work with, motivate, and support individuals of diverse backgrounds and personalities

Working Conditions

SFJAZZ has a hybrid work policy. This position requires a 4-days in the office work schedule. The work schedule varies including long hours during critical periods and special events. This job requires work during evenings and weekends.
