Job Description:
The Family & Children’s Law Center has an excellent opportunity for a bilingual (Spanish) staff attorney, who will focus on Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (“SIJS”) cases. These cases are an integral part of our deportation defense work. The Bilingual SIJS Staff Attorney will assist and represent undocumented youth in Marin County who are under the age of 21 and have experienced abuse, neglect, or abandonment by one or both of their parents in order to obtain predicate orders necessary for these youth to have legal permanent residence in the United States.
The mission of Family & Children's Law Center is to provide high-quality, low-cost legal services to children and families on general family law matters ranging from domestic violence and SIJS predicate orders, to child custody and support. Our SIJS work allows for our office to carry out its mission of advocating and protecting the rights of children and securing protections against abuse.

Responsibilities: As an integral part of our deportation defense work, the Bilingual SIJS Staff Attorney will focus on assisting and representing unaccompanied, undocumented minors to obtain predicate orders. Specific tasks include, but are not limited to:
- Preparing pleadings and Judicial Council Forms in of family law and Probate areas, correspondence
- Conducting client interviews
- Negotiating with opposing parties and counsel for SIJS matters
- Represent (in Person) SIJS clients in court hearings in Marin County Superior Court.
- Responsibilities also include keeping records as needed for purposes of grant reporting and timekeeping and assisting with agency fundraising efforts and events
Qualifications:
- Member in good standing of the State Bar of California. Attorneys with less than 1 year experience as a barred attorney are encouraged to apply.
- Spanish fluency is required
- Knowledge and experience in family law including SIJS preferred by not required (Our office will train attorneys who do not have experience in either family law and/or SIJS work)
- Ability to work efficiently and effectively under pressure
- Well-organized, motivated, creative, and independent, yet also able to work in a team-oriented environment
- Commitment to providing services with cultural humility and trauma-informed care
- Excellent verbal, research, interpersonal, writing, and interviewing skills
- Ability to appear in person for Court hearings
- Commitment to the Family & Children’s Law Center’s mission and work
Hours and Days per Week: This position is contracted for 2 years, but may be extended depending upon funding availability. Family & Children’s Law Center is looking to hire part-time (25-32 hours per week), but we are open to hiring full-time for the right candidate. Employees are expected to work Monday through Friday during usual business hours of 9 am – 5 pm, but exact times can be flexible for part-time work. The position can be partially hybrid (remote/in person) after 6 months of employment and upon performance review.
Compensation/Benefits: Compensation will be dependent on experience ($52,000 - $66,560 annually for part-time). Family & Children’s Law Center benefits include 10 holidays (plus December 25th-January 1st every year), vacation, sick leave, and health/dental/vision insurance (for full-time employment).
